Seeding season is here in Kansas City, and if you’re on our schedule for aeration and overseeding, you’re already on the right track to a thicker, healthier lawn. But a successful seeding job isn’t just about the work we do — it’s also about how you prepare beforehand and care for your lawn afterward.

Here’s everything you need to know to get the best results from your new seed.

Preparing Your Lawn Before Aeration & Overseeding

A couple of days before or the night before your scheduled service, there are a few important steps to take:

1. Water Thoroughly 💧

  • Why: Moist soil is easier to aerate, allowing the equipment to penetrate deeper. This means better soil opening and stronger seed-to-soil contact.

  • When: Water deeply in the evening or late afternoon. Apply about 1 inch of water so the soil is moist down to about 6 inches.

2. Mow a Couple of Notches Lower ✂️

  • Why: Cutting your grass shorter than usual helps the aerator work more efficiently and makes it easier for seed to reach the soil.

  • When: Drop your mower 1–2 notches lower than normal. Mow after watering, but don’t wait until the ground is too soft.

3. Additional Prep ✅

  • Remove debris: Pick up sticks, toys, and leaves that could interfere with aeration.

  • Mark obstructions: Use flags or markers to identify sprinkler heads, shallow irrigation lines, or cables so we can avoid them.

Doing these steps ensures your lawn is ready for Turf Geeks to do our best work.

Watering After Seeding

Proper watering is the most important part of seed establishment. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Days 1–14: Water lightly 3–4 times per day (8 AM, Noon, 4 PM). Keep the top ½ inch of soil consistently moist.

  • Weeks 3–4: Reduce to 1–2 times per day. Water deeper, soaking 1–2 inches into the soil.

  • Weeks 5–8: Water 2–3 times per week, making sure moisture reaches 3–4 inches deep.

  • Long-term: Settle into a routine of about 1 inch per week (including rainfall). The best time is always early morning to reduce evaporation.

Mowing New Grass

  • First mow: Once grass reaches 3–4 inches, mow at the tallest setting on your mower. Always mow when the soil is dry, and make sure blades are sharp to avoid tearing tender seedlings.

  • Regular mowing: Maintain grass at 3–4 inches. Never remove more than ⅓ of the blade in one cut. Switch mowing patterns to avoid soil compaction.

Weed Control

New lawns are delicate, so timing is key with weed control:

  • Wait until your new grass has been mowed at least three times (about 8–12 weeks after seeding).

  • At that point, you can apply a post-emergent weed control product that’s safe for new lawns. Always follow label directions carefully.

A thick, healthy lawn doesn’t happen overnight — but with the right prep and care, you’ll see results quickly. By watering, mowing, and monitoring properly, you’ll help your new seed establish into a lush lawn that naturally chokes out weeds.
