Fall in Kansas City is one of the most important times of year for your lawn. Cooler temps, shorter days, and falling leaves all play a big role in how your yard looks now—and how healthy it will be next spring. Here’s what you need to know:

Don’t Rake, Mulch Your Leaves Instead

Those leaves falling across your lawn aren’t a headache—they’re a natural resource. Instead of raking and bagging, use your mower to mulch them into the turf. Chopped-up leaves break down quickly, return organic matter back to the soil, and help feed your grass for free. Bonus: you’ll save your back the pain of endless raking.

Adjust Your Irrigation Schedule

With shorter days, longer shadows, and cooler temps, lawns simply don’t dry out as fast as they did in summer. Add in fall rains, and you may need to give your sprinklers a longer break than normal. Overwatering this time of year can lead to disease and shallow roots. Pay attention to soil moisture, and only water if your lawn truly needs it.

Aeration & Overseeding Window

If you haven’t aerated and overseeded yet—there’s still time! Turf Geeks is booking aeration & seeding through October 15th. This process opens up compacted soil, allows seed-to-soil contact, and sets your lawn up for a strong recovery next spring.

Why stop October 15th? Because once we get close to frost season, new seed is at risk. In Kansas City, our average first frost is around Halloween. While established turf can handle it, young seedlings may not. That’s why we set the cutoff for seeding, but continue aerations only until Halloween.
